2. Gather your documents

3. Work through Form 1040 line by line

  1. Filing status: single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, head of household or qualifying surviving spouse.
  2. Income (lines 1-9): wages, interest, dividends, retirement income, Social Security and Schedule 1 income such as self-employment.
  3. Adjustments (line 10, Schedule 1 Part II): for example half of self-employment tax, HSA and student-loan interest.
  4. Deductions (lines 12-13): the 2025 standard deduction is $15,750 single, $31,500 married filing jointly and $23,625 head of household, plus the new Schedule 1-A deductions (tips, overtime, seniors, car loan interest) and the QBI deduction.
  5. Tax and credits (lines 16-24): child tax credit ($2,200 per qualifying child), credit for other dependents and Schedule 2/3 items.
  6. Payments and refund (lines 25-38): withholding, estimated payments, the earned income credit and the refundable additional child tax credit.

Do it in minutes: the TaxPilot return wizard fills Form 1040 and Schedules 1, 1-A, 2, 3, B, C, SE, 8812 and Form 8995 privately in your browser and merges them into one PDF.

4. Sign, file and pay

Sign and date the return (both spouses on a joint return), attach Copy B of each W-2, and mail it to the address for your state listed on the IRS Where to file page. The deadline for 2025 returns is April 15, 2026. If you need more time, Form 4868 extends the filing deadline to October 15, but not the deadline to pay.
